Discover the Wine Country on Your Doorstep

Living in the Kaiserslautern Military Community puts you surprisingly close to one of Germany’s most beautiful wine regions.

The Pfalz (Palatinate) stretches along the Deutsche Weinstraße, where vineyards roll toward the edge of the Pfälzerwald and picturesque wine villages are filled with family-run wineries, traditional Weinstuben and modern Vinotheks.

And the best part? You don’t need to plan a weekend away to experience it. Many excellent wineries are only around an hour from Kaiserslautern and Ramstein.

Wine tasting in Germany can also be refreshingly informal. At many wineries you can visit the Vinothek, sample a few wines and buy bottles directly from the producer. Others offer organized tastings, vineyard walks and special events.

Here are 15 wineries worth discovering within approximately two hours of the KMC, starting with some of the closest.

1. Weingut Fitz-Ritter

Bad Dürkheim, Rheinland-Pfalz

Set in the heart of Bad Dürkheim, Weingut Fitz-Ritter combines wine, history and beautiful surroundings.

The estate dates back to the 18th century and is particularly interesting because it is both a winery and a traditional sparkling-wine producer. The historic property and garden give it much more of a destination feel than simply stopping somewhere to buy a bottle.

It makes an excellent starting point for a day exploring Bad Dürkheim and the northern Deutsche Weinstraße.

Look out for: Riesling and German Sekt.

Make a day of it: Walk through Bad Dürkheim, explore the vineyards or stop at one of the town’s many restaurants and wine taverns.

2. Weingut Hensel

If you prefer modern wineries to traditional old wine cellars, Hensel is a great one to put on your list.

The winery has developed a reputation for contemporary Pfalz wines and is an interesting contrast to some of the region’s centuries-old estates.

You’ll find everything from Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc to Pinot varieties and richer red wines.

Best for: A modern introduction to Pfalz wine.

Tip: Combine Hensel with another Bad Dürkheim winery and turn your visit into your own mini wine tour.

3. Weingut Wolf

Bad Dürkheim-Ungstein, Rheinland-Pfalz

Just north of Bad Dürkheim is the small wine village of Ungstein, surrounded by vineyards.

Weingut Wolf is a good choice if you’re looking for something that feels a little more like visiting a local Pfalz wine producer rather than a major tourist attraction.

It’s also ideally located for exploring the northern section of the Deutsche Weinstraße.

Best for: A relaxed wine-country afternoon away from the larger towns.

4. Weingut Schröder-Weisenborn

Kallstadt, Rheinland-Pfalz

Kallstadt is one of those villages that looks exactly how you imagine German wine country should look.

Vineyards surround the village, while the main street is lined with wineries, restaurants and traditional buildings.

Weingut Schröder-Weisenborn is right on the Weinstraße, making it an easy stop while exploring the village.

Make a day of it: Have lunch in Kallstadt and continue through nearby Leistadt, Ungstein or Bad Dürkheim.

5. Weingut Reichsrat von Buhl

Deidesheim, Rheinland-Pfalz

Reichsrat von Buhl is one of the historic names of the Pfalz and has been producing wine since the 1800s.

Riesling plays a starring role here, but the estate is also well known for its sparkling wines.

The location couldn’t be much better: it’s right in Deidesheim, so after your visit you can walk into the town and continue exploring.

Look out for: Riesling and Sekt.

Best for: Someone who wants to experience one of the classic names in German wine.

6. Geheimer Rat Dr. von Bassermann-Jordan

Deidesheim, Rheinland-Pfalz

The name might be a mouthful, but Bassermann-Jordan is one worth remembering.

The estate has centuries of wine history behind it and is one of the famous producers associated with Deidesheim.

For anyone interested in understanding why Pfalz Riesling has such a strong reputation, this is an excellent place to start.

Look out for: Riesling from some of the area’s celebrated vineyard sites.

Perfect for: Wine enthusiasts as well as visitors wanting a classic German wine experience.

7. Weingut Andres

Deidesheim, Rheinland-Pfalz

For something a little different from Deidesheim’s grand historic estates, add Weingut Andres to your route.

It’s a younger, highly regarded producer and another easy stop while walking through Deidesheim.

Visiting several contrasting producers is actually one of the most enjoyable ways to spend a day here — you can see just how differently wineries interpret grapes grown only a short distance apart.

Best for: Wine lovers interested in discovering newer-generation Pfalz winemakers.

8. Weingut Mehling

Deidesheim, Rheinland-Pfalz

Another winery conveniently located along Deidesheim’s Weinstraße, Mehling gives you yet another reason to leave the car behind and explore the town on foot.

It’s particularly handy if you’re planning your own Deidesheim wine crawl rather than visiting just one estate.

Make a day of it: Add lunch or dinner in Deidesheim and take a walk through the vineyards surrounding the town.

9. Weingut Müller-Catoir

Neustadt-Haardt, Rheinland-Pfalz

Located in the beautiful wine village of Haardt above Neustadt, Müller-Catoir is another of the Pfalz’s highly regarded estates.

The winery has a long history and produces a broad range of wines, with Riesling and other traditional varieties taking centre stage.

The location is also gorgeous. Haardt sits above Neustadt with vineyards climbing toward the Pfälzerwald.

Best for: Serious wine lovers.

Nearby: Neustadt old town and Hambacher Schloss.

10. Weingut Hellmer

Neustadt-Mußbach, Rheinland-Pfalz

Mußbach is another of the wine villages surrounding Neustadt and makes a lovely alternative to the more famous destinations farther north.

Weingut Hellmer is a convenient place to experience a local winery while exploring this part of the Deutsche Weinstraße.

Best for: Combining wine with a relaxed afternoon around Neustadt.

11. Weingut Ökonomierat Isler

Neustadt-Diedesfeld, Rheinland-Pfalz

Diedesfeld sits directly below Hambacher Schloss, making this one particularly easy to combine with sightseeing.

Visit the castle, enjoy the views across the Rhine Valley and then head into wine country.

Make a day of it: Hambacher Schloss + winery + dinner somewhere along the Deutsche Weinstraße makes a fantastic day trip from the KMC.

Heading South – Landau & the Südliche Weinstraße

The farther south you travel, the landscape becomes even more Mediterranean in feel. Vineyards, fig trees, old stone villages and the hills of the Pfälzerwald create some gorgeous scenery.

12. Weingut Emil Bauer

If traditional German wine labels feel a little serious, Emil Bauer will change that impression quickly.

The winery has become known for its bold, humorous and sometimes cheeky bottle labels, giving traditional Pfalz wine a distinctly modern personality.

It makes this a particularly fun winery to introduce to friends who are new to German wine.

Best for: Fun labels, gifts and a younger take on Pfalz wine culture.

13. Bioland Weingut Stefan Kuntz

Landau, Rheinland-Pfalz

For those interested in organic wine production, Stefan Kuntz offers another side of the Pfalz wine scene.

The winery operates according to Bioland organic standards and is a good addition to a southern Wine Route itinerary.

14. Weingut Kernlinghof – Ludwig & Philip Hochdörffer

Nußdorf is surrounded by vines and home to numerous producers, making it easy to spend several hours exploring the area.

Kernlinghof is another family wine estate that gives visitors a chance to get away from the biggest wine-tourism names and experience the local wine culture.

Best for: Exploring smaller family-run wineries.

15. Make Your Own Deutsche Weinstraße Wine Adventure

Okay, technically this isn’t one winery — but it might be the best recommendation on the entire list.

Rather than choosing a single destination, pick a stretch of the Deutsche Weinstraße and simply explore.

Villages such as:

Kallstadt – Bad Dürkheim – Wachenheim – Forst – Deidesheim – Ruppertsberg – Neustadt – St. Martin – Rhodt unter Rietburg – Edenkoben

are surrounded by vineyards and wineries.

You’ll see signs reading Weingut, Vinothek, Weinprobe and Weinverkauf everywhere.

Stop for lunch, wander through a vineyard, discover a small family winery you’ve never heard of and take a few bottles home.

Sometimes those unplanned stops turn out to be the best ones.

A Few Things to Know Before You Go

Wine tasting in Germany can be different from the organized tasting-room experience you may know from places like California.

Many wineries are working farms and family businesses. Although some have beautiful Vinotheks with regular opening hours, others prefer visitors to arrange a tasting in advance.

Always check the winery’s current opening hours before setting off, particularly on Sundays, holidays and during harvest season.

If you want a full guided tasting rather than simply trying a couple of wines before purchasing, making a reservation is a good idea.

And remember: don’t drink and drive. If you’re visiting several wineries, designate a driver, arrange transportation or choose somewhere such as Deidesheim where you can park once and explore several wineries on foot.

What Wines Should You Try?

If you’re new to German wine, don’t worry about knowing all the terminology.

The Pfalz is particularly famous for Riesling, but you’ll find much more than sweet white wine — and plenty of Riesling here is dry.

Look for:

Riesling – the star of the region, ranging from crisp and dry to fruity and sweet.

Grauburgunder – Pinot Gris; an easy-drinking and extremely popular German white.

Weißburgunder – Pinot Blanc; fresh, elegant and excellent with food.

Spätburgunder – Pinot Noir; Germany’s best-known red grape.

Sauvignon Blanc – increasingly popular in the Pfalz.

Dornfelder – a deeper-coloured German red that you’ll frequently encounter.

Sekt – German sparkling wine. Don’t overlook it! Some Pfalz producers make outstanding traditional-method sparkling wines.

When ordering, trocken means dry and halbtrocken means off-dry.

Wine Festivals – The Other Way to Experience Pfalz Wine

You don’t necessarily have to visit a winery at all.

Wine festivals are a huge part of life in the Pfalz, with events taking place throughout the wine villages during much of the year.

You’ll find everything from tiny village festivals where local producers set up stands in their courtyards to enormous events such as the famous Bad Dürkheimer Wurstmarkt.

Grab a wine glass, find a table and sample wines from several local producers while enjoying traditional Pfalz food.

It’s one of the most fun — and most authentically German — ways to discover the region.
