🐘 Tiergarten Nürnberg (Nuremberg Zoo)
📍 ~1 hour from Grafenwöhr/Vilseck
💡 Why Go?
Unlike many city zoos, Tiergarten Nürnberg is set in a forested landscape with rolling hills, lakes, and lots of shade. Covering about 67 hectares (165 acres), it’s one of Europe’s biggest landscape zoos, blending enclosures harmoniously with the surrounding forest. Walking through feels more like a nature hike than just a zoo visit. Home to more than 300 species including elephants, polar bears, big cats, manatees, and dolphins. Nuremberg Zoo is one of only two zoos in Germany that houses dolphins. The Dolphin Lagoon and the adjoining Manatee House are visitor favorites, designed with natural outdoor pools and underwater viewing windows.

🧸 Playmobil FunPark (Zirndorf/Nuremberg)
📍 ~1.5 hours from Grafenwöhr/Vilseck
💡 Why Go?
Instead of rides like you’d find at a theme park, this place is all about hands-on play. Kids can climb aboard pirate ships, explore castles, drive pedal karts, dig for treasure, and even splash in water play areas—just like living inside their favorite Playmobil sets. Think “Legoland vibes without the big-ticket price.” Entry is much more affordable, and because everything is designed for active play, you don’t end up spending extra on rides or attractions. There are big “play worlds” themed after PLAYMOBIL sets: for example, a pirate ship in a lake, a Western town, a castle with secret passages, dinosaur areas among others. New for 2025: to celebrate its 25th anniversary, the FunPark introduced a new “Baustelle” (construction) play area where kids can pretend to build, ride diggers and move stones.
