Explore Europe – Trier

Trier is Germany’s oldest city dating back to the first century BC. Situated on the banks of the Moselle river, it lies in a valley between low vine-covered hills of red sandstone in the west of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate (Rheinland-Pfalz), near the border with Luxembourg and within the important Moselle wine region. With an approximate population of 105,000, Trier is the fourth-largest city in the state of Rheinland-Pfalz, after Mainz, Ludwigshafen, and Koblenz.

Born by the Moselle River as Augustus Treverorum back in 16 BC, Germany’s oldest city has managed to retain most of its Roman past. Trier has a city-wide UNESCO World Heritage Site, protecting incomparable monuments like the largest Roman gate outside Italy (Porta Nigra), the Basilica of Constantine (Aula Palatina) built by Emperor Constantine, an imposing amphitheatre, an imperial bathhouse and the oldest cathedral in Germany.

You could spend a lot of time under Trier’s spell, enjoying the Roman treasures at the Landesmuseum, navigating the cellars below the amphitheatre or the passageways at the Imperial Baths. After the Romans, Trier was ruled by Archbishop-Electors for hundreds of years, leaving the city with a rich Medieval heritage.

Trier’s most famous son is Karl Marx, philosopher and founder of the theory that would become known as Marxism, who was born in the city in 1818.

Trier is just a two hour drive from the KMC, so when need a great car, come and see the good guys at UCG! Find a great new-to-you vehicle for your trip from The Used Car Guys. Locations in Ramstein, Kaiserslautern, Spangdahlem and now Stuttgart!
