Our 9 Favorite Beer Gardens Near USAG Stuttgart

When the sun is out, there is nothing better than a cool beer in a German beer garden (Biergarten). Luckily for those of us living near Kelley, Patch or Panzer in USAG Stuttgart we have a lot of great options to choose from. But perhaps you are new in town or don’t yet know your way around thanks to months of lock-down? No problem! We asked Nick, David and Matt to give us their favorite spots for a great after work (Feierabend) beer in the area.

Given the low COVID incidence rates in the region, most of these places currently do not require you to show a negative test or proof of vaccination for entry. However the situation changes frequently, so be prepared and check in advance. You may also need to book tables.

Whilst the pandemic has forced many traditional German establishments to modernise such as checking in with the luca app and some will now accept contactless payment methods. However, many still only take cash payments. So consider that your credit card may not be used for payment before you set off and always carry some cash in Euros.

Stuttgart City Beer Gardens

These city center beer gardens are great for when you have overseas guests visiting or you want to wind down with a cold one after some city sightseeing or shopping.

Paulaner am alten Postplatz

Munich beer in Stuttgart? Well, why not! Imagine sitting in the middle of Stuttgart in the sun but shaded by beautiful old trees, surrounded by the hustle and bustle of the city, but in front of you there’s a Bavarian roast pork and a refreshing Paulaner on tap. It’s not a bad scenario is it?

Calwer Str. 45

Biergarten Schlossgarten

There is no more central place to experience real beer garden flair than in the middle of the beautiful castle garden. Sonja Merz has established a classic Bavarian-style open-air paradise, which is very popular with tourists and locals. A freshly tapped beer and a couple of sausages under the sprawling trees are just hard to beat. There is often live music on Sundays.

Biergarten Karlshöhe

We haven’t visited here yet but it’s on our last thanks to the promise of incredible views of the city; from the terrace you can see as far as the Neckartal and Schurwald. The beer garden on Karlshöhe is located in the middle of a park with a playground and English-style gardens. It’s quite an oasis to discover in the city and offers a great beer selection.

Beer Gardens in Stuttgart Suburbs

The greatest thing about living in German is that almost every town has its own brewery and brand of beer. Therefore by moving out of the main city and exploring the suburbs, you are introduced to new, local brews. This is great news especially for those living near U.S. installations because areas like Böblingen, Leinfelden and Vaihingen have some very nice local breweries to explore!

Schönbuch Brauhaus

This is a modern beer terrace rather than a rustic beer garden, but you are going to find it delightful all the same. It’s one of our favorite after-work spots because it’s just up the road from our Schönaich location, so it’s very handy for us.

The menu offers a nice mix of local and international cuisine and of course the delicious home-brewed Schönbuch beer is always on tap.

Brauhaus Böblingen

Lange Strasse 20

Schwabengarten, Leinfelden

SchwabenGarten

This is probably our favorite summer spot. The beer garden here in Leinfelden has such a cool alpine holiday vibe to it and this year there is even the addition of a beach.

It’s quite a busy spot but the service is fast and the food excellent. They don’t brew their own beer here but serve Stuttgart made Dinkelacker and Schwaben Bräu.

Stuttgarter Straße 80

Sophie’s Brauhaus, Cannstadt

There’s a branch of this in the city center, but for the summer feels we recommend heading out to the historical Felgerhof at Bad Cannstadt to experience the rustic beer garden. Enjoy Swabian specialties and delicious salads accompanied by a nice locally brewed, Sophie’s beer!

Towers Irish Pub, Ludwigsburg

Now this isn’t a traditional German beer garden as such, but on the grounds that Used Car Guys was founded by two irish brothers, we’re including it here on a technicality!

As well as serving our local beers, you can also find Guinness and Kilkenny here on tap, which makes it worth the trip! Expect lovely traditional irish pub food such as fish and chips whilst you sit in the square and watch the world go by. This pub is approved by the Irish!

Hasenheim Bonlanden, Filderstadt

This place describes itself as a ‘dream beer garden’ and we think it might be! What could be nicer than to sit under old fruit trees … in the middle of the green and relax with a delicious meal and a cool beer.

The Hasenheim-Bonlanden is no-longer just a local secret and is very popular with young and old. And there is plenty for the whole family to enjoy too; building castles in the sandpit, a great adventure playground or in enjoying the farm animal enclosure.

Katzenbacher Hof, Vaihingen

This is a wonderful summer location in the woods that is just a short walk from Patch Barracks. It’s a perfect family spot because as well as a huge beer garden, it offers a very large playground for kids. Now doesn’t that sound like a winning combination?
