Winter tires are made to maintain traction in extreme cold, ice, snow or slush. If you have been in Germany through a winter then you have already experienced those conditions and I’m pretty sure you don’t need convincing why winter tires are not just a good idea, but essential.
Oktober bis Ostern. October to Easter. That’s is the recommended period to have winter tires on your vehicle whilst you are in Germany. Then you should change them back to Summer tires. But many folks prefer to use tires all year round and think it’s going to save money.
Well here’s 3 pretty compelling reasons why you should be changing your winter tires for summer tires, right now!
Reduce wear & tear
On a winter tire, the compound ensures the rubber stays soft and flexible in order to perform better in those conditions, which is great. Better safety, better performance. Woop! However, once the weather warms up you don’t need that level of deep tread or studs on your wheels for traction.
The soft and flexible tread on a winter tire will wear rapidly in warm temperatures. You could end up wearing down your tires so quickly that you have to replace much sooner than you think.
Increase performance & better safety
Just as winter tires are designed to perform well in the winter, they really aren’t designed for optimum performance in the summer.
That lovely summer sunshine heats up the roads and the tires, making them soft and squishy which considerably reduces their ability to function safely and efficiently. Can you imagine trying to make fast manoeuvre with squishy tires? That’s not how to enjoy driving on German roads!
Extra safety check
If you don’t change your tires seasonally, you are missing out on an opportunity for a qualified mechanic to check your tires (and brakes etc!) . And that might just save your life.
I am not making this up… when my own tires were changed over last year, the mechanic found a nail in one, which was causing a slow puncture. It was well hidden and I had no idea it was there. If he hadn’t had spotted it I would have driven on completely unaware. That’s scary. An extra set of eyes on your tires is a great additional safety check.
Basically, the smart move is to have two sets of seasonal tires for your vehicle: Winter and Summer and change them over accordingly. You’ll have a safer, more enjoyable and comfortable ride. And extend the life of both sets of tires, which will save you dollars in the long run!
