We know it can be tough to find ways to entertain small people, especially when you move to a brand new location like Ramstein or Kaislerslautern and don’t speak a word of German! So we asked James’ wife where she likes to take their two year old, Eddy. Here are her suggestions:
1. Gartenshau Kaiserslautern
A lovely park with a great water play area and super playground for nearly every age. There are dinosaurs and flowers everywhere to look at as you go around and always lots of different activities for families and children including a pumpkin festival in September and a Family day on 9th September.
There is also currently a huge lego exhibition in the hall. A treat for kids and adults! There’s a beer garden and restaurant for drinks and food.
2. Paddelweiher Hütte
45 mins from the KMC into the Pfalzerwald is another great day out for families and kids.
There is a lovely playground here, you can rent boats and enjoy lovely walks around the lake and into the surrounding forest. And the traditional restaurant serves lovely local food that is really reasonably priced.
Elfie tells us that the best thing about the location of this play area is that it’s in that village has huge shoe outlets that are open on Sundays between March and October!
3. Stellwerk in Weilerbach
On warm days the Bistro-Cafe Stellwerk in nearby Weilerbach is a lovely place for kids to hang out, messing around in the water fountains and scoffing icecreams.
4. Forsthaus Isenbach
About 45 mins from the KMC situated in the Pfalzerwald between Bad Dürkheim and Kaiserslautern is another really nice playground for kids next to a lake that offers boat rental and lovely restaurant hut. The forest walks around this area are really lovely for all ages.
5. Marchenparadies Heidelberg
About an hour from the KMC in Heidelberg this is a fantastic day out based on fairytales, dragons and puppets. There’s an enchanted forest to discover, trains to ride, dragons to hunt, birds of prey to see, trampolines, bumper cars, donkeys, castles, playgrounds and puppet shows. It’s a perfect bumper day out for younger kids.
6. Tripsdrill Theme Park
Tripsdrill is about two hours from the KMC but quite close to Stuttgart. It’s a proper theme park so probably a bit more of a full-on day out.
Tripsdrill features over 100 original attractions depicting Swabian life in the late 1800s. Remarkable attention to detail, dedication to authenticity and respect for nature truly set Tripsdrill apart. The park’s original attractions, such as the launch coaster „Karacho“, are nestled amid flourishing natural surroundings .
Together with Wildparadies – a wildlife park, Tripsdrill offers two parks for the price of one. You can also sleep in the very cool Tree Houses in the Nature Resort if you fancy staying overnight!
7. Kurpflalz-Park in Wachenheim
In Wachenheim (right next to Bad Dürkheim) is probably the best day out in less than 45 mins from the KMC!
The Kurpfalz-Park is a small amusement park where attractions are built amongst the forest. There are some fabulous wildlife to see: deers, stags, mouflons, wild boars, lynxes, raccoons, donkeys, birds of prey, goats and rabbits.
This place is a paradise of play for kids: an amazing adventure playground, a mini fortress, summer toboggan runs, giant slides, swan paddle boats, chair lifts, tractor-powered park shuttle, a treetop pirates’ nest, a puppet theatre, a maze garden, a petting zoo, and bumper boats.
You can bring you own food, rent a BBQ for the day or use the snack hut or restaurant inside the park. Good for alleges.
8. Holiday Park Pfalz
Located in Haßloch which is about an hour away from Kaiserslautern, Holiday Park is a full-on amusement park with all the attractions, rights and shows you would expect. Including indoor parks, playgrounds and rollercoasters and theatre shows. Good for all ages.
9. Tierpark Worms
About 45 minutes from Kaiserslautern, the animal park in Worms is home to over 600 animals from all over the world. You can get up close and personal with them all in this small but lovely and educational zoo. There is a play area for children and a small cafe for snacks.
10. Wildpark Potzberg
Just 35 minutes from the KMC the Wildpark und Greifvogelzoo am Potzberg features one of the most amazing bird demonstrations you might ever see. The zoo is located on the top of a mountain, so the sights are beautiful. The show starts everyday at 1500 and lasts for about one hour.
Watching a hawker command the flight of at least a half dozen birds of prey all at once is incredible to see. The American Bald Eagles fly above and among the spectators close enough to feel the wingtips brush against the ears of some. Then the Kites, Falcons and Hawks join the show as well, and it the sky becomes a mesmerizing display of Mother Nature’s finest, flying and criss-crossing all around you.
The park also features white reindeer, moose, bison, Friesian horses and several types of sheep and other animals. A walk through this park is a super afternoon out.
11. Neunkircher Zoo
About 45 minutes from the KMC you can explore a fascinating jungle full of animals in the middle of Neunkirchen. There are almost 500 animals from 100 different species over 16 hectares to discover.
There are daily demonstrations and animal feedings to watch at various times:
10:30 am common seals (except for Thursday)
11:00 am falconry – airshow
14:00 pm elephants
15:00 pm common seals (except for Thursday)
15:30 pm falconry – airshow
Sundays and holidays
14:30 pm giraffe
16:00 pm meerkats, racoons and minks
You might note that Germans are quite hardy when it comes to the weather so you can expect that a lot of the activities mentioned above feature outdoor play areas in the forest. We recommend that you just bring the right clothing and enjoy this fabulous all-weather lifestyle that we have here in Europe. You soon get used to be out in the open no matter what the weather!
